The Artist in Residence Program

In the early days of the American west, the railroads used art prints and advertising art to promote rail travel to our first national parks. This and other western scenic art awakened a nation to the magnificent beauty found in our western national parks. Today, the sights and sounds in national parks continue to inspire artists in more than 50 residency programs across the country.

Artists can further this legacy through Mojave National Preserve’s Artist in Residence program, managed by the Mojave National Preserve Artists Foundation. Selected individuals will discover and interpret this landscape and historical sites through their own creative projects. Hosted by national park personnel, chosen artists will have opportunities to explore and become a creative conduit to promote a deeper understanding of the Mojave National Preserve.

Apply for a Residency

The Mojave National Preserve Artists Foundation seeks qualified emerging growth and seasoned artists who wish to participate in this exceptional program. Through a jury review process, we select six artists each year who will have 2-4 weeks of onsite residency to develop their project. Artists exhibit their work in the Desert Light Gallery at the Kelso Visitors Center for a period of 60 days and in the Desert Light Gallery online for 24 months.
